Fiona Carruthers
Interdisciplinary Artist
She / her
Fiona is an interdisciplinary artist exploring sustainability and survival. Her work draws on experiences of living on low-lying marshland where the consequences of climate change on human and nonhuman ecologies are easy to see. Physical disability and post-traumatic growth, outcomes of having survived local flooding, have furthered her understanding of how inextricably linked we are to nature, technology and other species.
“Uncertainty in these vulnerable landscapes is ever-present and personal. That the world is not things, but processes of transformation and mutuality is plain to see. Survival, I realise, is an unsought, unspoken and powerful imperative that drives all forms of life.”
Fiona’s fragile ephemeral works rely on the cooperation of all of their parts to exist, including viewers’ amended behaviour. Sustainability is expressed as a dynamic process dependent on the human and nonhuman relationships that she has choreographed. Inclusivity and mutuality are offered as a tactic for survival and a proposition for a better, not-quite-familiar future.
Fiona has been selected for residencies, awards and prizes and exhibits internationally: 2024 Our Stories are Wild, Derby Cathedral; 2023 Points of Return, Umbrella Arts, Massachusetts, USA; 2023 Process, Martin Hall Gallery, Loughborough University, UK. She received an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in 2022.
