Gemma is an educator, creative and advocate for sustainable food. Her background in Textile Art and Design led to teaching across the education sector in mainstream institutions, focussing on nurturing mixed media skills, storytelling through creative processes to using materials to deepen meaning and deliver practical outcomes.
Gemma gained an MA in Education in 2015, building her confidence in accessible curriculum design, creative teaching methods and student friendly approaches to learning. This led to speaking opportunities at education events and working in a wide range of education settings nationally as a consultant to enhance Art and Design curricula.
After a gear shift into home education, food became an outlet for her creativity as well as a support for wellbeing in a neurodivergent household. Bringing the depth of knowledge gathered from her experience in Art and Textiles, to explore how food can be used as a tool to prompt conversation on a wide range of subjects, Gemma has continued to educate through the medium of food. Partnerships with Lincolnshire Co-op, Lincoln Bishop University and her own commercial premises, ‘The Allotment’ in Collingham enabled her development into the sustainable food and connection within the community.
Most recently, Gemma has begun her PhD studies with a focus on the food choices of neurodivergent students researching how this contributes to wellbeing whilst away from home. Her research continues to focus on connection and nourishment – not simply looking at food as a fuel for the body, but how food choices can be the essential nostalgic link to safe, familiar and comforting surroundings enabling one to thrive.
