Exhibition of works from Fleur Patrick
Fleur was born in New Zealand and emigrated to the UK as a child; leaving behind her home and family. This upheaval, combined with the challenges she faces as a neurodivergent woman left her with an acute sense of geographical and social estrangement. Her paintings draw on these disorienting experiences.
She is deliberately detached from the spaces she depicts; holding back in her description; to suggest just enough to a viewer. Structural elements provide a context, vaguely recognisable, within which the paint’s organic material properties disrupt and obscure. In her collaborations with paint; Fleur is present and responsive handling unpredictable elements to keep a dialogue with the material alive.
Her work is balanced between representation and abstraction, between image and surface, solidity and fluidity. These dichotomies enhance uncertainties concerning function, condition and location;suggesting tensions that reflect on dislocation and anxiety.
