Shibori workshop, 26 July

Shibori is a resist dyeing technique. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb ‘Shiboru’ meaning to squeeze, press or wring out. Sections of fabric are folded, clamped, bound or stitched, before being dipped into the dye, traditionally Indigo blue dye on white fabric.

In this class you'll learn a variety of basic shibori techniques which will enable you to create many different patterns, providing the perfect introduction to this ancient craft. By the end of the session you will have a collection of beautiful fabric samples to use in your own personal projects, such as collage, quilting, dressmaking. You may even decide to practice your new found skills to refresh or restyle things in the home…. table runners, T-towels, pillow cases, bags, scarves or items of clothing….the possibilities are endless.

Your tutor is Kay Davis, Coreset resident textile artist and costume maker, who takes her inspiration from Japanese textile disciplines including Sashiko, Boro and Shibori.

Content:  Learn folding, clamping, binding and stitching techniques. Learn about and sample with various natural dyes, including Indigo.

Class Size: Max 10 students

Where: The class will take place in Coreset's Common Room which is on the groundfloor. Coreset and its resident artists will help you to feel relaxed and inspired as you learn. We purposefully keep class sizes small to ensure a quality experience and plenty of guidance time with Kay.

Please bring: All fabrics for sampling will be supplied, If you wish to dye a small item such as a T towel, table napkin, or pillow case please ensure that it is made from 100% Cotton or Linen and has been washed and dried before bringing to the session.

Includes all other materials. Packs of materials will also be available to purchase on the day in addition to the class should you wish to continue your practice at home.

Please note: You will be provided with drinks and cakes. You are welcome to bring a water bottle and will need to bring your own lunch.
